J*Company makes history

Audience members will have just as much trouble as Dalmatians Pongo and Perdita when it comes to keeping count of all 101 Dalmatians, played by children from across San Diego in J*Company Youth Theatre's production of the Disney classic.

The production runs from May 8 to 18 at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla, closing out the Disney-themed 2007-2008 season.

"This is the largest cast I've ever worked with, and it's the largest cast J*Company has ever done," said Joey Landwehr, artistic director.
Cast members range in age from 7 to 13. Landwehr said he had more trouble with staging than with handling the humongous production.
"It seems like the more kids you have, the more well-behaved they are," he said. "It's amazing to see these 7-year-olds taking direction and doing well."

While in production, the cast visited the San Diego Humane Society for a tour. They also held a rehearsal there.

The collaboration continues through the May 11 show when the Humane Society's mobile adoption unit will be on site at the Jewish Community Center from noon to 4 p.m.

Landwehr said there is a saying in show biz about avoiding working with animals and children because you never know what they're going to do.

"I get to deal with both in this show," he said, "but what I can say with certainty is that you'll enjoy this show."
