USD to honor Prof. Friedman La Jolla resident C. Hugh Friedman will be honored on Oct. 31 at a celebration marking his 50 years of teaching at the University of San Diego School of Law.
The event will be held at the USD Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald M. George will give a presentation titled "Challenges Facing the Courts," which will be followed by a panel discussion on what law faculty can do to address the challenges.
A luncheon will follow.
Friedman, who received his B.A. from Yale University in 1953 and his J.D. from Stanford University in 1956, began teaching at USD in 1958 when he moved to San Diego to become in-house corporate counsel for a fast-growing corporate conglomerate. He joined the USD School of Law, which became ABA-accredited in 1959, as an adjunct faculty member and became a full-time faculty member in 1977.
Sammy's names new COO Dan Clay, former senior vice president of Houston's Restaurants, is the new chief operating officer for Sammy's Woodfired Pizza.
Clay, a graduate of University of Missouri, started in the restaurant business when he was 15 as a back of the house employee of a small privately owned restaurant in St. Louis. More recently, Clay served as president of Houlihan's Restaurants in Leawood, Kansas, where he was responsible for more than 100 restaurants.
As COO for Sammy's Woodfired Pizza, Clay will oversee all aspects of the company's operations, including the group's specialty concepts including Roppongi Restaurant & Sushi Bar and Mosaic Catering.
Scripps chief on Top 100 list Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps has been named to the list of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare, published by Modern Healthcare magazine. He is the only San Diego health system executive on the list.
Breast cancer fundraiser set Mihir Parikh, M.D., of Advanced Opthamology Institute and La Jolla Optique invite the public to a "Share the Vision, Shades for Pink" fundraiser during National Breast Cancer Month.
The event from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 16, will feature the Prada Eyewear collection. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
Lisa Takarich, La Jolla Optique's managing optician and a 10-year breast cancer survivor, is coordinating the event at the shop, 4130 La Jolla Village Drive, Ste. 102.
