Opening Day brought out the fashion forward and the fashion faux pas. The following took the top spots in the "hits" and "misses" categories:
Hits Polka dots: White, black, brown, pink, red - whimsical polka dots in all colors were seen, and often. Long dresses: Many women placed their bets on lengthy hemlines, one of summer's hottest trends. White: The purist of colors kept the masses cool on the hot, humid day. Light-colored, pinstriped suits: These casual, yet classy suits outfitted men young and older. Patent heels: Shiny and tall, tall, tall was the protocol for women's footwear on Opening Day.
Misses Sans shirt: Even the most perfect pecks and awesome abs needed to stay covered. Sombreros: A sombrero technically is a hat, but come on! Fluorescent sunglasses: Unless your name is Kanye West, these didn't belong at the races on Opening Day - or ever. Birkenstock sandals: The mid-1990s called and asked for its sandals back. Apparently some people didn't get the message. Cowboy boots adorned with chains: Just plain wretched.
