Headmaster answers questions raised in student's column
Oct 2, 2008
- La Jolla Light

I am proud that Frannie Tyner, a Bishop's junior and member of the School's student newspaper staff, is a contributing writer for the La Jolla Light. I congratulate her on her first article that appeared in the October 2, 2008, edition and thank the newspaper for its decision to invite students in the community to comment on issues at their schools.

In her article, Frannie described all of the activities that took place on campus in September in celebration of the school's Centennial. However, what Frannie did not yet know about are the steps we are taking to educate and inspire our students about this milestone moment in the history of The Bishop's School.

Beginning in mid-October every student will view the new Centennial video, learn from alumni what the school means to them, and tour The Bishop's School History Exhibition. It is significant that these sessions will take place in October since this is the month when Bishop's honors Ellen Browning Scripps and the other school founders at an annual event.

The Centennial at Bishop's is not about parties, banners and T-shirts, we recognize that we have a once-in-a-lifetime to claim the legacy of the school's rich history and we have kept our students at the forefront in the planning that went into creating this year and the three exhibitions we will stage on campus.

Throughout its 100 years, The Bishop's School has been a vital member of the La Jolla and San Diego communities. Our history exhibition effectively tells the school's story which in many ways is the community's story. I invite everyone interested to visit the history exhibition in the Wheeler J. Bailey building on campus. Exhibition hours are Tuesdays (9 a.m. to noon), Thursdays (3 to 7 p.m.) and Sundays (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
Michael W. Teitelman
Headmaster of The Bishop's School
