Week in Sports: Vikings' comeback bid falls short
Oct 8, 2008
By Gregory Ball - La Jolla Light

Football
La Jolla High School suffered a 37-24 defeat to Lincoln High School on Oct. 3, falling behind early and then mounting a comeback that fell just short.

The Vikings spotted Lincoln a 31-7 lead through the midpoint of the third quarter, but came back to within one touchdown of the Hornets thanks to 63-yard touchdown pass from Henry Nawahine to Yoshi Rothman, a 46-yard scoring run from Andy Jones and Lee Abelkop's 34-yard field goal.

Lincoln scored once more with less than three minutes to play, though, and La Jolla's comeback bid was finished.

Robbie Beathard led the Vikings with 86 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and Matt Petch rushed seven times for 78 yards.

Kitt Livingston made nine tackles, while Nawahine, Rothman and Petch each had eight.
The Bishop's School eased to a 48-7 victory over Southwest of El Centro on Oct. 3.

Junior running back A.J. Chederick led the offensive onslaught with 17 carries for 210 yards and four touchdowns. Joey Moreno completed nine of his 15 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown. Micah Seau caught that scoring pass, one of his three receptions totaling 55 yards.

Mike P. Jensen had seven tackles and two sacks, Seau had two sacks, and Alex Carrillo contributed 10 tackles.

La Jolla Country Day stumbled to a 76-7 defeat at the hands of Francis Parker on Oct. 3. The Torreys scored first on an 8-yard Derek Hatfield touchdown run that capped an 80-yard, 9 minute, 30 second drive, but then allowed 11 straight Francis Parker scores.

Girls' volleyball
La Jolla Country Day secured a three-games-to-one victory over rival The Bishop's School on Oct. 1. Thea Derrough led the Knights with 12 kills in a losing effort, and Kendall Lord chipped in with 11 kills and three blocks for Bishop's.

Bishop's fell to Santa Fe Christian in five games on Oct. 3. Carly Bollert led the Knights with 18 kills, and Ina Kamenova totaled 41 assists and six kills. Julie Gantz had four aces, and Carly Guiducci added three. The Knights dropped to 12-6 and 0-1 in the Coastal League South.

Boys' water polo
The Bishop's School secured a key victory over rival Coronado on Oct. 3, beating the host Islanders, 8-7. The Knights battled back from a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter.
Justin Wolfe scored three goals, while Scott Siegel added two and Drew Hoffenberg scored twice and had an assist. Christian Ronald made 10 saves, and Ollie Feune de Colombi had a key shot block and steal in the final seconds.

La Jolla High School swam to a 14-5 victory over University City on Oct. 3. Hunter Gettlefinger scored six goals, while Joe Laird and Alex Arcidiacono each scored twice.

Cross country
La Jolla Country Day's boys' team finished second out of 19 teams Oct. 3 at the Small Schools Invitational at Morley Field, and they were the top team from Division IV.

Alex Poyhonen led the way by covering a 3.12-mile course in 17 minutes, 7 seconds and finishing sixth. Dennis Roth was eighth in 17:16, and Alex Fleischhacker (15th) and Lee Klitzner (20th) also finished in less than 18 minutes.

The Torreys' girls' team placed eighth overall and fifth in Division IV at the same event. Sam Staszak led the team with a 14th-place finish among Division IV runners in 19:57, and Kaitlin McCallum was 16th in the division in 20:24.

The Bishop's School's boys' team finished third at the Small Schools Invitational on Oct. 3. Henry Su led the way by placing 10th in 17:29, and Will Botta was 16th in 17:46.

The Knights' girls' team also finished third in the event. Laura Wyatt finished fifth in 17:34, while Lauren Collins was ninth in 18:15 and Naomi Wagner was 10th in 18:21.

Girls' golf
The Bishop's School earned a win by forfeit over Santa Fe Christian on Oct. 2 at Morgan Run's East Course. Courtney Hooton had the Knights' low score, a 39.

Field hockey
La Jolla High School secured a 4-3 victory over Valley Center on Sept. 30. The Vikings rolled to a 12-0 win over Granite Hills on Oct. 2, improving their record to 7-2 this season.

BEST BETS

Boys' water polo
Friday, Oct. 10 - 3 p.m.
La Jolla High School vs. The Bishop's School

This matchup would create great interest based solely on the proximity of the schools, as the teams could without much trouble poke their heads over the others' fences to get a scouting report. It's always an even better battle because the Vikings and Knights are both regularly competitive for the CIF San Diego Section Division II championship.
