Vikings football suffers last-minute defeat to Serra

Despite a strong performance, La Jolla High lost by two touchdowns during the fourth quarter to Serra High School Oct. 24.

Football
La Jolla High School suffered a 21-17 defeat to Serra on Oct. 24, allowing a game-winning touchdown with 35 seconds to play.

The Vikings had led, 10-0, at halftime, and still held a 10-point advantage after three quarters, but allowed two touchdowns in the final frame.

Robbie Beathard led La Jolla's offense, with 15 carries for 91 yards and two touchdowns, and Victor Rangel rushed 10 times for 73 yards.

Defensively, Thomas Bowman, Henry Nawahine and Kitt Livingston each had an interception.

La Jolla Country Day rolled to a 51-14 victory over Calipatria on Oct. 24, earning a victory in its first Pacific League game of the season.

The Torreys were dominant offensively, as quarterback Derek Hatfield returned from injury and went a perfect 8-for-8 passing, totaling 114 yards and two touchdowns.

Montell Allen rushed 11 times for 109 yards, and scored a remarkable five touchdowns. Kees Thompson led all receivers with four catches for 77 yards.

Allen led the way defensively with nine tackles, while Junior Togiaso totaled six tackles, a forced fumble and two recovered fumbles. Blake Mohseni made six tackles, including a sack, and Anthony Torres added an interception.

Zach Wolfenzon connected on all four of his point-after-touchdown attempts.

Girls' volleyball
The Bishop's School swept its way to a 25-9, 25-20, 25-17 defeat of Horizon Christian on Oct. 24. Thea Derrough had 10 kills for the Knights, and Maddie Lord added nine kills and four aces. Bishop's improved to 17-8 and 4-1 in Coastal League South play.
La Jolla High School fell to Cathedral Catholic, 17-25, 12-25, 25-23, 10-25, on Oct. 21. The Vikings rebounded with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 win over Point Loma on Oct. 24.

Boys' water polo
La Jolla High School swam past University City, 8-4, on Oct. 21. Hunter Gettlefinger and Joseph Laird each scored three goals.

The Vikings then secured a key 9-8 victory over rival Coronado on Oct. 23. Gettlefinger led the team with six goals, including three in the fourth quarter. Goalie Cameron Ravenbach made nine saves.

The Bishop's School fell to Coronado, 9-8, on Oct. 22.

Cross country
La Jolla Country Day's boys' team turned in a respectable fourth-place finish in the Division IV sweepstakes race Oct. 24 at the Mt. SAC Invitational. Senior Alex Poyhonen led the Torreys, finishing third overall by covering a difficult 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 52 seconds. Dennis Roth was 16th in 16:45, Lee Klitzner was 31st in 17:13, Eric Blodgett was 41st in 17:47, and Noah Wolfenzon was 47th in 18:06.

The Torreys' girls finished ninth of 28 teams in their race. They were led by freshman Sam Staszek, who clocked a time of 23:49 and finished 39th. Kaitlin McCallum was 42nd in 22:59.

La Jolla High School's boys' team placed fifth in the large schools division at the Jaguar Invitational at Kit Carson Park on Oct. 24. Michael Conroy was third in 16:42 over 3.12 miles, and Andrew Farkas finished 16th in 17:28.

The Bishop's School's boys' team also competed at the Jaguar Invitational on Oct. 24, and finished second out of 18 teams in the small schools division.

Girls' golf
The Bishop's School secured a key 206-208 victory over Francis Parker at La Jolla Country Club on Oct. 20. Courtney Hooton had the Knights' low score, a 1-over-par 37. Spenser Krut shot 40.

Girls' tennis
La Jolla Country Day toppled San Dieguito Academy, 10-8, on Oct. 21. The Torreys fell to Poway, 13-5, on Oct. 22, yet still clinched the Coastal League South title.

The Bishop's School beat Santa Fe Christian, 13-5, on Oct. 21. The Knights toppled Canyon Crest Academy, 10-8, on Oct. 23.

Field hockey
The Bishop's School rolled to a 3-0 victory over Mission Bay on Oct. 22. Lia Sagerman scored two goals, and Marjorie Rosser added two.

The Knights then toppled Point Loma, 4-0, on Oct. 24. Sagerman scored two goals, while Irene Kim and Alissa Arnold each scored one.

La Jolla High School dropped a 9-3 decision to top-ranked Scripps Ranch on Oct. 22.
