La Jolla High Vikings roll to dominating victory

La Jolla High School dominated University City with a 51-8 victory during Friday's game. The Vikings scored 44 of their points during the first half.

Football
La Jolla High School rolled to a 51-8 win over University City on Nov. 7, scoring 44 unanswered points in the first half.

Robbie Beathard carried the ball six times for 108 yards and two touchdowns, and Victor Rangel also scored twice. Quarterback Henry Nawahine completed all four of his passes for 76 yards, and he ran for a 6-yard touchdown.

Adam Lautanen sparked the defense in his first varsity game, making a tackle in the end zone for a safety and returning a fumble six yards for a touchdown three minutes later. Nawahine made six tackles at middle linebacker, and Thomas Bowman added seven tackles and a sack.

La Jolla Country Day rolled to a 30-0 victory over Escondido Charter on Nov. 7.

Behind the offensive line of Steve Fackler, Blake Mohseni, Alex Papgeorge, Indie Lavarias and Junior Togiaso, the Torreys rushed for 241 yards, averaging more than 10 yards per carry. Montell Allen rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 32 yards. Derek Hatfield rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown and completed six of his nine passes for 91 yards.

Allen led the Torreys defense with 18 tackles, and Doug Rogers had nine tackles, three sacks and a safety. Anthony Torres added an interception.

The Bishop's School suffered a 27-20 defeat to Christian on Nov. 7, allowing a touchdown pass in the game's final two minutes as their opponents remained unbeaten this season.

Joey Moreno led the offense with 241 yards on 15-of-25 passing, connecting twice with Justin Peabody for 60 yards and a touchdown and with Mike Jensen four times for 46 yards. Micah Seau carried 19 times for 103 yards.

Jensen led the defense with 15 tackles, and Seau added 10. Defensive end Jesse Ramey had five tackles and a sack for the Knights.

Girls' volleyball
The Bishop's School fell to Francis Parker, 26-24, 30-28, 19-25, 25-20 in a two-hour match on Nov. 5. Carly Bollert led the Knights with 14 kills, and Thea Derrough added 11. Julie Gantz totaled 27 digs, and Kendall Lord added three aces.

The Knights bounced back with a 25-16, 25-18, 24-26, 23-25, 15-12 victory on Nov. 6, securing the Coastal League South championship in their final regular-season game of the year. Derrough led the team with 17 kills, Gantz had 24 digs, and Ina Kamenova totaled 49 assists and 15 digs, while Carly Guiducci provided an important spark off the bench, coach Tod Mattox said.

Boys' water polo
The Bishop's School swam to a 14-3 win over University City on Nov. 5, securing the City League championship. Demian Tschirn led the Knights with four goals.

The Knights continued to roll with a 10-9 victory over top-ranked Carlsbad on Nov. 6. Sophomore Drew Hoffenberg netted the game-winning goal with 20 seconds to play. Tschirin and Justin Wolfe each scored three goals, and Scott Siegel added two. Christian Ronald made 10 saves in goal.

Bishop's secured a 6-5 victory over Newport Harbor on Nov. 8. Ronald stopped a last-second shot to preserve the win, and Wolfe scored three goals. Hoffenberg scored twice, and Scott Siegel added a goal and three assists.

Girls' tennis
La Jolla Country Day topped Mater Dei, 14-4, in the CIF San Diego Section Division III quarterfinals on Nov. 6. Elena Najera swept her singles sets, and the Torreys got doubles sweeps from the teams of Katie Woods/Megan Woods, Olivia Hipkins/Lani Frankville, and Amanda Mulligan/Kelsey Miller.

The Torreys continued to roll with a 12-6 win over San Marcos in the semifinals on Nov. 7. Najera took two of three sets in singles, and all three doubles teams swept.

Field hockey
La Jolla High School secured a 5-0 win over Madison on Nov. 5. Claire Mittermiller scored a goal and added two assists, while Maddy Sharp, Kaitlin Sharpe, Sam McLaughlin and Kristina Mendaz each scored once.

The Vikings then rolled to a 6-1 victory over Mission Bay on Nov. 7. Mittermiller scored three times, McLaughlin had two goals, and Marlin Schumacher scored once.
