Eugene Fodor
By Jose A. Lopez

World-renowned violinist Eugene Fodor keeps a very busy schedule.

Last week, the virtuoso was getting ready to embark on a European tour, followed by performances in Mexico City and Hawaii.

As he zig-zags the world, Fodor will stop in Poway, where he's scheduled to play a show at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, May 31.

Fodor shot to fame after winning the first prize at the International Paganini Competition in 1972. Two years Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York and the Royal Festival Hall in London - with local school children.

In a phone interview from his home in Colorado, Fodor - who made his solo debut with the Denver Symphony when he was 10 - said he feels privileged to be in the position of sharing his passion for music with young people.

Over the last 25 years, he has regularly put aside time during his tours to perform in school assemblies and teach master classes.

His purpose, Fodor said, is to introduce all children - including those who may not have had previous experience in music - to the wonders of classical music he has experienced.

"Even as a young child, classical music has been unlike anything I had ever experienced and more fun than I could ever imagine," Fodor said. "Facing the challenge of the violin and musical experimentation has been a source of great excitement."

Those are bold statements, considering that Fodor also enjoys such activities such as horse endurance riding, scuba diving and other physical activities.

"Music-making is no less exciting to me," he added. "I'm completely excited to share that with students who have no idea of the treasure that lies waiting to be discovered."

The concerts in Poway will take place at 8 p.m. May 31 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road.

Tickets are $39, $5 for kids 18 and under. For more information, go to www.powayarts.org or call (858) 748-0505.later, he won the coveted Tchaikovsky Prize in Moscow.

For his local concert, Fodor will be backed by the San Diego Youth Symphony's Philharmonia, a pre-professional orchestra that features some of the area's top young musicians.

The concert, under the direction of Jeff Edmonds, will include "Mazurka" from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," Edouard Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole" and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Op. 67.

While he is in San Diego, Fodor will also share his musical talents - which have thrilled audiences at
